Godzilla vs. Kong, also known by the working title of "Apex" is a 2021 American science fiction monster film produced by Legendary Pictures, and the fourth entry in the MonsterVerse, following 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, acting as a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

Although initially scheduled for May 29, 2020, Godzilla Vs. Kong had a rocky development and had to be postponed many times before finally being released on May 21, 2021, which was originally scheduled for March 13, 2020. On March 26, 2021, the film was rescheduled for release before being released on March 31, 2021, the original scheduled release date in the United States of America. Also available on HBO Max until April 30, 2021 was the film's theatrical release.

In addition to being directed by Adam Wingard, the film is produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers, with the screenplay written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, based on a story by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. The film is currently in production. King of the Monsters was written by Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields as well. Godzilla vs. Kong is set five years after the events of King of the Monsters, and it follows Godzilla and Kong as they engage in a massive fight in the aftermath of Ghidorah's wrath.

A dramatic confrontation between fabled rivals Godzilla and Kong is the focus of "Godzilla vs. Kong" Along on the adventure is Jia, an orphaned child with whom Kong has built an unbreakable bond. But they find themselves in the path of an infuriated Godzilla, wreaking havoc throughout the globe. It is simply the beginning of the enigma that lurks deep below the Earth's core.

As of 2024, five years after Godzilla defeated and killed his alien foe Ghidorah in a battle for control on Earth in 2019, he and Kong are the only Titans still alive on the planet. When a storm generated by Ghidorah combined with the storm cell that surrounds the island, the climate on Skull Island became unstable, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that replicated the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language, providing him with company.

Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons recruits Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to help guide them to the Hollow Earth, an underground world below the Earth and the hidden home to the Titans, in search of a powerful energy source. At first, Nathan is initially hesitant since his brother tried to explore the Hollow Earth, but a strong anti-gravity field inside the tunnel ended up killing him. He finally agrees after Walter reveals that Apex has created and developed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, specialized crafts that are capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

Nathan, Ilene, Jia, and an Apex team led by Walter's daughter Maia board a specially designed boat with a moderately drugged Kong tied up. Kong becomes restless and worried later that night, but Jia calms him down by having her and Kong clasp hands in solidarity while Kong signs the word "home" for Ilene. The next day, Ilene tells Nathan about how she raised Jia as her own after harsh and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi, including her parents, but Jia was the lone survivor because Kong saved her, which led to their bond.

At this point, Jia senses Godzilla's presence by feeling vibrations through the ship as the Titan arrives and attacks the military before capsizing the barge, nearly drowning Kong as well as the others inside. Fortunately, Nathan manages to free Kong by unlocking his chains, allowing him to battle Godzilla underwater long enough for him to swim to the surface and flip the barge back on its head, saving the group from drowning. Kong leaps onto a nearby aircraft carrier to face Godzilla, who climbs aboard to face Kong. The two Titans exchange violent blows before fighter jets distract Godzilla enough for Kong to push him back into the ocean. Godzilla fires his atomic breath from under the carrier, but Kong manages to leap off to evade the blast, only for Godzilla to wrap his tail around Kong and drags him into the depths of the ocean intending to drown the Titan.

Nathan, seeing no other choice, determines that the crew should instead shut off all of the ships' power in order to fool Godzilla into believing that he has destroyed them and Kong has been beaten, which they finally succeed in doing. Godzilla looks about at the shattered fleet with a puzzled expression on his face and then swims away, certain that he has triumphed. As a result of realizing that Godzilla may resurface if the ships are reactivated, the survivors adjust their plans and instead fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entrance point in Antarctica, the location where Ghidorah was first frozen. Jia reveals to Kong that his house is via the front door, but that he is apprehensive about going through it.

Meanwhile, Madison and Josh find Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their investigation as they believe Apex had something to do with Godzilla's change in behavior. Together, they sneak into the wrecked Apex base, only to find that the "eye" Bernie had described earlier is now gone. As they discover a secret facility deep underground, the group are inadvertently locked and transported in an antigravity transport vehicle carrying Skullcrawler eggs through an underground tunnel to Hong Kong.

Walter plans to use the energy of the Hollow Earth to overcome Mechagodzilla's restrictions, it is revealed later. Madison then understands that Mechagodzilla is the reason Godzilla attacked in the first place: Apex is attempting to replace him and all of the Titans in order for humans to become the Earth's apex species. Madison and the others stumble upon a room where Ren is sitting inside Ghidorah's severed head, which has been turned into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla through radio waves after Apex acquired it from Alan Jonah after it was bitten off by Godzilla during his battle against Ghidorah five years ago.

It looks like Skull Island inside the Hollow Earth. They are walking through the countryside when they are attacked by a pair of Warbats. One of them destroys one of the HEAVs, but the other doesn't. When the first Warbat was killed, Kong swung its body into the second one, which knocked it out, but the creature came back and wrapped itself around him. This gives Kong a chance to get away from the Warbat. The creature is then hit with missiles from Nathan's team in their HEAV, giving Kong a chance to break free and beat the Warbat to death before eating its internal parts.

When Godzilla makes his way into the city center and senses that Kong is lurking in the Hollow Earth, he uses his atomic breath to dig a hole through the biosphere, causing a temple to fall apart. Despite the fact that Kong and Nathan's team are fighting off a horde of Hellhawks and Maia and her team are attempting to escape in their HEAV, Kong manage to grab the aircraft and crush it in his hand after peeking inside to make sure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan are not inside, killing Maia and her crew.

Mechagodzilla, under the influence of the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks, goes wild unexpectedly, murdering Walter with a sweep of its palm and electrocuting Ren when Walter's back is turned. Ghidorah's mind has now taken control of Mechagodzilla, who escapes the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain before Godzilla can stop him. Mechagodzilla attacks Godzilla with a hail of missiles as soon as it comes into contact with him, setting the stage for an all-out fight.

Meanwhile, Josh and Bernie try to remotely deactivate the renegade robot, and Madison summons Mark for aid, while Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battle, with Godzilla getting the upper hand and burning Mechagodzilla. Jia observes Kong's pulse diminishing as the three approach him, while Mechagodzilla continues to batter Godzilla. They are unable to generate a large enough charge to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan recalls Maia's earlier remark about the HEAVs producing enough power to power Las Vegas for a week, so he flies the last HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

As he makes his way to Jia's house, Kong stops to watch the battle between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla. As Kong sees Godzilla be beaten by Mechagodzilla, she is first doubted by Kong, but she ultimately explains that the robot is the "real" danger. When Godzilla's leg is dislocated, Kong finally accepts and puts his anger aside before joining the battle to save Godzilla.

Kong leaps atop Mechagodzilla and deflects Godzilla's life-threatening crimson energy beam into the air. After recognizing Kong saved his life and that he is not a foe, Godzilla assists Kong in fighting Mechagodzilla.

As much as the Titans try to unite and change the tide, the robot proves to be too powerful for them. It is revealed that Kong had previously lost his axe when fighting Godzilla, and he reclaims it from the ruins and tries to use it against Mechagodzilla, but his weapon is rendered ineffectual by the robot's tail drill. With nothing left to do, Bernie takes out a flask of vodka and suggests that they all go out for a drink. The flask Bernie had been holding was snatched by Josh, who had an idea and poured the contents of the flask on the control panel, causing Mechagodzilla to halt and enabling Godzilla and Kong the time to recover.

When Godzilla sees Kong wielding his axe, he charges it up with his atomic breath, enabling Kong to sever Mechagodzilla's limbs and pull off its head before raising his trophy and taking a seat to rest.

When Madison reunites with Mark and introduces him to Josh and Bernie in the aftermath, Mark is overjoyed and asks him into his show to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears and interrupts the moment, causing Kong to fetch his axe and prepare for a resumption of the battle. Instead of attacking, Godzilla just stands there and looks Kong in the eye. At last, the long-running animosity between Kong's race and Godzilla's is laid to rest as they both acknowledge their actual foe has been slain. Godzilla and Kong treat each other as equals before Godzilla returns to the ocean quietly as Kong and the rest of the assembled humanity watch.

Monarch established an observation station in the Hollow Earth some years later. Ilene, Nathan, and Jia observe Kong as he walks across the neighborhood one morning. Kong jumps atop a cliff, pounds his chest, and roars, proclaiming himself king of the Hollow Earth and joyously accepting it as his new home and dominion.

Reception for Godzilla vs. Kong has been mostly favourable. On Rotten Tomatoes as of April 16, 2021, the film has 341 reviews, 254 of which are fresh, and a "Tomatometer" with a 74% certified Fresh rating. Godzilla vs. Kong, according to the reviewers' consensus, "Delivering squarely on its title, Godzilla vs. Kong swats away character development and human drama to deliver all the spectacle you'd expect from giant monsters slugging it out."

Since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla and King Kong haven't appeared in a picture together.

It's Terry Rossio's first Godzilla picture since he wrote the unproduced script for the 1994 feature that never got filmed.

Chandler's appearances in King Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong give him the distinction of being the only individual to appear in the casts of a King Kong picture, a Godzilla film, and a crossover feature between the two.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is mentioned multiple times in the film:

The base where Mechagodzilla is stationed has a striking similarity to the Central Dogma, being subterranean and topped by a pyramid.
